Top 10 Things Musicians Could Do to Make Money With Their Music and Talents

As a musician, it can be difficult to make a living solely through your music. However, there are several things that you can do to increase your chances of making money with your talents. Fortunately, there are several ways to monetize your music and generate revenue streams with your craft. In this article, we will explore the top 10 things that musicians could do to make money with their music and talents.

Social Media and Brand Partnerships

Social media has become an essential tool for musicians to connect with their fans and promote their music. Platforms like Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and YouTube allow musicians to reach a larger audience and build a loyal fanbase. Brands are always looking for ways to connect with consumers, and music is a powerful tool for reaching people.  When you have enough followers or subscribers, you can work with brands that fit your vibe to create sponsored content (example: paid ad reference links) or even perform at brand events.

Collaborations

Collaborating with other artists can lead to new opportunities and revenue streams. Working with other musicians can also help you learn new techniques and gain valuable experience. You can work with other musicians, producers, or even brands to create music or content that reaches new audiences and expands your fanbase.

Play live shows

Playing live shows is one of the most traditional and popular ways for musicians to earn money. You can book gigs at local venues, clubs, restaurants, festivals, or even private events like weddings or corporate parties. You can also organize your own concerts and charge a fee for tickets. The key is to build a following and promote your shows effectively.

Online Streaming

Streaming services like Spotify and Apple Music offer a great way to get your music in front of a large audience. While streaming payouts, otherwise known as “recorded performance royalties”, can be relatively low, having your music available on these platforms can lead to more exposure and opportunities.

Sell digital downloads

In addition to selling physical copies of your music, you can also sell digital downloads through platforms like iTunes, Amazon and Bandcamp. This allows fans to purchase and download your music from anywhere in the world. You could even sell your music from your own website with WordPress eCommerce plugins.

Songwriting Royalties

Songwriting is a skill that can be monetized in many ways. You can write songs for other artists, license your music for commercials or TV shows, or even sell your songs to music libraries. If you write your own music, you can earn royalties when your songs are played on the radio or streamed online. If you are in the US or Canada, you can register your music with a performing rights organization (PRO) such as ASCAP or BMI to ensure you receive proper payment. Other countries have their own PRO’s that serve their local songwriters.

Licensing your music for TV, film & ads

Music licensing involves getting your music placed in TV shows, movies, commercials, and other media. You can either work with a licensing agency or pitch your music directly to companies. It is usually best to work with a reputable sync service that can provide (“solicit”) your music to working music supervisors. They actually prefer listening to music from trusted relationships over people they don’t know. In any case, music sync licensing can be a lucrative way to earn money from your music.

Sell merchandise

Selling merchandise is a great way to supplement your income as a musician, especially if you have a solid fanbase or social media following. Selling merchandise (“merch”) like t-shirts, hats, sweatshirts, and stickers can be a great way to make extra money while also promoting your brand. You can sell merchandise at live shows or through your website using a simple ecommerce plugin or service like Shopify. Bonus idea – streaming platforms like Spotify and Amazon Music allow musicians to link their merch on their profiles.

Crowdfunding

Crowdfunding allows you to raise money from your fans and supporters to fund your music projects or to support going on tour. Platforms like Kickstarter, Indiegogo and Patreon make it easy to set up a campaign and offer rewards in exchange for donations.

Offer music lessons or workshops

If you have expertise in your instrument or music theory, offering music lessons or workshops can be a great way to make extra money. You can offer lessons in person or create online courses or tutorials and sell them on platforms like Udemy or Skillshare. If you are ultra-motivated and have a lot of extra time and patience, you could start a YouTube channel and provide lessons on your channel. When you get enough subscribers and watch time, you can monetize your videos and make steady ad revenue income from YouTube.

In conclusion, there are many ways that musicians can earn money with their music and talents. Earning money as a musician requires a diverse set of skills and strategies. By leveraging your talents and exploring these revenue ideas, you can build a sustainable career in music. Remember to stay focused, stay creative, and always be willing to try new things.

5 Reasons Why Musicians Should Care About Data Analytics

Music has always been a powerful art form that can evoke emotions, connect with people, and shape culture. In today’s digital age, technology has created new opportunities for musicians to connect with their fans, expand their reach, and grow their brand. One of the most important tools for achieving these goals is data analytics.

Here are five reasons why musicians should care about data analytics to grow their brand and fanbase.

1. Understand your audience

Data analytics provides valuable insights into your audience. By analyzing data about your fans’ listening habits, geographic location, age, gender, and other demographic information, you can better understand who your fans are and what they like. This information can help you tailor your music and marketing efforts to better meet their needs and preferences, which can ultimately lead to increased engagement and loyalty.

2. Optimize your marketing efforts

Marketing is a crucial component of building a successful music career. With data analytics, you can track the effectiveness of your marketing campaigns and make adjustments to optimize your efforts. For example, you can track the number of clicks, shares, and conversions generated by your social media posts or email campaigns and use this data to refine your messaging and targeting.

3. Identify new opportunities

Data analytics can help you identify new opportunities for growth and expansion. By analyzing data about your audience and the music industry as a whole, you can identify emerging trends, untapped markets, and new collaborations that can help you grow your fan base and increase your revenue.

4. Improve your performances

Data analytics can also help you improve your live performances. By tracking data about the venues you play, the size of the audience, and the engagement level of your fans, you can make adjustments to your setlist, stage presence, and performance style to better connect with your audience and create a more memorable experience.

5. Increase revenue

Finally, data analytics can help you increase your revenue. By tracking data about your sales, streams, fans, followers, subscribers, and merchandise sales, you can identify areas where you can improve your pricing, distribution, and marketing strategies to increase your income. You can also use data to negotiate better deals with streaming services, labels, sponsors, and promoters.

In conclusion, data analytics is essential for musicians who want to grow their brand and fanbase. By understanding your audience, optimizing your marketing efforts, identifying new opportunities, improving your performances, and increasing your revenue, you can take your music career to the next level.

Introducing ARELIA – Your Music Business OS®

Developed by musicians for musicians, ARELIA is a first-of-its-kind software, delivered as a cloud-based SaaS, that empowers independent artists, managers and indie labels with the same digital tools and capabilities typically reserved for major labels. ARELIA is integrated with many of the most popular music industry and social media platforms and apps and continues to add integrations. The ARELIA Music Business OS® platform combines cutting-edge technology with intuitive design, providing users with a beautiful, seamless experience to manage their music careers effectively.

Let’s start with the elephant in the room. “Music Business” – If you are a musician, song-writer, producer, manager, or label, or even emotionally support any of these people, you are involved in the ‘music business’. If you are writing, performing, recording and releasing songs and/or music to the masses, congratulations, you are running your very own ‘music business’.

ARELIA Origin Story

Why ARELIA? The ARELIA Back Story (Origin Story)

It all started with our kids. Growing up in a household of musicians, at ages 6, 8, 9, and 13, our kids began singing (in four-part harmony) just about everywhere we went. Their pure sibling harmonies attracted crowds all around them. The kids convinced us parents to launch a YouTube channel, and we recorded and posted one music video of a raw live performance. Months later, out of the blue, we got a call from America’s Got Talent asking us to send them more live performance material. More about that story later ☺.

Fast forward to the pandemic years (2019-2020), and our family used our “stuck at home” time to write 26 original songs. We slowly started to record, publish, release, and distribute our original songs worldwide, forcing us to create an independent music label called Hope Lane Records (part of Hope Lane Media).

After years of building our signature music brand (Hope Lane, the band) and the indie music label Hope Lane Music, we realized there are big gaps in the music industry when it comes to serving independent artists.  As an indie label promoting our artists, we grew tired of using & logging into multiple apps, copying/pasting data from one place to another, managing our brand and social media, maintaining multiple CRMs & spreadsheets to keep track of fans, playlist curators, TV/Film sync supervisors… So, we created the solution!

THE PROBLEM

Too Many 1-off Tools

A tool for this. A tool for that. Data everywhere. Difficult to manage. SOLVED.

THE SOLUTION

Music Biz Orchestration

ARELIA is the only cloud platform that brings the key brand/business tools together in one beautiful interface.

Research & Experience

We began a quest to learn everything about the music industry’s leading software tools, and services for independent artists. We combined:

  • Industry knowledge & lessons learned from running an indie music label (Hope Lane Records).
  • Our founder, Robert W Wells (RWW), has music industry experience from 30 years of working in the music biz as a recording artist + singer/songwriter, touring globally with music on the radio and streaming services.
  • Our founding team started and launched several successful software companies (B2B, B2C) and are recognized authors and speakers on emerging technology.
  • Deep research and interviews with industry experts, career musicians and songwriters, publishers, producers, major label executives, and other indie labels.
  • Our research covered: Creative works, artificial intelligence (AI), automation, songwriting, recording, copyright (IP protection), publishing, distribution, music sync, playlisting, digital marketing, promotion/placement, programmatic marketing, brand creation, social, fan management, merchandising, and live performances.

What we Learned

All our research and experience led us to conclude that the major labels are good at what they do for many reasons. They have developed the tools, systems, and processes and have the intimate connections to build stars.

Independent artists have so many options when it comes to tools and apps, but none provide the power of a major label without requiring the equally extremely large investment. The sheer number of current tools and apps independent musicians need to use to be successful leads to confusion, distraction, and a disjointed view of reality.

We are on a mission to create the best and most innovative tool for musicians that makes the complex – simple. ARELIA empowers musicians to maximize their revenue-generating potential, better connect with fans, and gain better control of the activities and creative output that makes up their ‘music business’. Get back to making music and let ARELIA take care of the rest!

We sincerely hope you will join us on our journey and help further our mission to provide the best Music Business OS® ever built.

Sign up today and give ARELIA a try.

Here’s to YOUR Success… Blessings to you!
